Acolytes

An acolyte is one who actively assists the priest with dignity, humility, and care at the altar. The young acolyte is patiently trained by one of the vergers to carry the cross or torches in procession, to hand the vessels to the priest at communion, to wash the priest’s hands, and to attend to other needs that might arise during the service. The acolyte will learn the names of items used during the service as he or she performs this vital role.

Lectors (readers)

In an Episcopal church service, there are two scripture readings done before the worship leader delivers the Gospel and the Sermon. These two scripture readings are read by members of the church from the congregation. They ask that readers be older than 16 years old. The only other requirement to join this group is that you be a member of Trinity and be physically able to go to the Prayer Desk at the front of the church and read the assigned scripture. If you are interested in being a Lector, please email Ned at the address listed above or call the parish office to inform them you are interested in this group.

Vergers

In old England vergers led the procession with a large stick to clear the path of sheep and other animals. Today vergers carry the verger stick more as a symbol of their office, but they may still use it to prod a sleepy parishioner. Behind the scenes, the verger is the master of ceremonies. He or she is familiar with every role in the service and stands ready to either fill the role or find someone else to fill it, if necessary. At Trinity, the verger rises early on Sunday mornings to unlock the church, plug in the coffee, and make sure everything is ready for us all.

Ushers

Ushers greet members and newcomers alike at the door of the church on Sunday mornings. They provide hospitality by handing out bulletins, helping people find seats and answering questions. During the service, the ushers get a headcount and guide the congregation to communion. After the service, the ushers gather bulletins from the pews. From time to time ushers are called upon to assist with weddings, funerals, and special services throughout the year.

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is the liturgical partner of the priest. It is a ministry - a gift of time and talent to serve God in His house. Altar Guild members care for the altar, vestments, vessels and linens used during worship services. Members work together to prepare the sanctuary for services, assist the clergy and clean up afterwards while assisting the Flower Guild as needed during the year for special services (Easter, Christmas, etc.). This is a great ministry to learn more about the details of the service and meet parishioners.  All ages are welcome to join us and no experience is required.

Flower Guild

Drawing from the natural beauty we enjoy in Hattiesburg, members of the Flower Guild will meet in teams each week to arrange the flowers on the altar. Team members will learn flowering arranging techniques and will be on hand to encourage and support one another as they make this weekly offering to the glory of God. Parishioners can also participate in this ministry by sharing seasonal flowers from their yards.

Eucharistic Ministers

A Eucharistic Minister is a layperson authorized to administer the consecrated elements (blessed bread and wine) at a celebration of Holy Eucharist. The Ministers wear white vestments (albs) during the service. At Trinity the Eucharistic Minister also leads the psalm and the Prayers of the People. Eucharistic Ministers are now authorized, at the request of the Rector, to administer both bread and wine during the service. The Eucharistic Minister must be approved by the Rector and Vestry each year and licensed by the Bishop. For an appointment, see The Reverend Carrie Duncan (601) 544-5551.

Eucharistic Visitors

Eucharistic Visitors are licensed each year by the Bishop. Eucharistic Visitors carry communion to the home bound and those in hospitals as soon as possible following the Sunday services. In this way, we fulfill the teachings of St. Paul who said, "We who are many are one body, for we share in one bread, one cup." Any adult desiring to serve the church community in this ministry needs to meet with our Rector Carrie for training and licensing.
